Photosynthetic adaptation and drought resistance in durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum): analysis of genotypic variability.

Abstract: Six durum wheat genotypes (Triticum turgidum var. durum [T. durum]) were compared for their physiological responses to water deficit. The following parameters were measured: net photosynthesis, stomatal resistance, relative water content and leaf water potential. Likewise, the activity related to the primary processes of electron transfer of the PSII [photosystem II] was analysed in order to evaluate the resistance of the photosynthetic apparatus to internal water deficit. A high variability was observed in the parameters measured. Furthermore, the results show that the reduction rate of photosynthetic activity is largely linked to the degree of stomatal closure and the reduction of PSII activity, valorizing the stomatal and non-stomatal aspects of photosynthetic adaptation in the genotypes studied. The greatest values of photochemical and photosynthetic activities were found in the genotypes with the lowest leaf water potential values.
